Homemade Baby Pea Food

Is your baby ready to try peas and you want to make it special for them with homemade pea purée? Then here’s an easy recipe that only requires peas and water – it’s perfect for first foods! Although I admit that peas were not any of my 3 girls baby food of choice, all of them liked this homemade recipe enough to eat it all. This would often be their dinner, and I would also pack in containers for daycare lunch. We all know how baby food isn’t cheap, so I hope you try this homemade recipe, which is much more budget friendly!

Can babies eat pureed peas?

Yes, pureed peas are a great first food for baby. I like to start out with apples, pears and bananas, and then move our way to peas, carrots and sweet potatoes. Warning: Baby might make some cute little faces when first trying peas so get the camera ready! Here’s Europa eating some! 🙂

How to Make Pea Baby Puree

Boil frozen peas in water until very soft.
Reserve 1/2 cup of the water before draining. Place peas and water in a food processor and pulse until the consistency forms that you want. If your baby is just starting food, you want it super smooth. If they’re a little older and can handle it, you can leave it a little thicker. Use 1/2 cup of the water to create a thin puree, or use 1/4 cup of the water for a thicker puree.
My daughter is 6 months old and has been on baby food since 4 months old, so she is comfortable with it a little thicker. Using a spoon, mix around to double check that there are no clumps remaining. Serve, refrigerate or freeze for later usage (directions below for all methods)

Can I use formula or breast milk?

Sure, if you’d like to, you can swap the water for formula or breast milk instead.

How to Store Baby Food

Store baby food in the refrigerator for 24 hours, or freezer for long term storage. I like to store the baby food in glass jars if I’m putting them in the refrigerator or sending to daycare. To freeze, scoop pea puree into ice cube trays. Cover with a lid or plastic wrap and then freeze.
Once completely frozen, pop them out of the ice cube tray and then place in freezer bags. As you need them, remove the cubes from the freezer bag. Frozen baby food is good for 6 months.

How to Reheat

You can either reheat baby food on the stove top or microwave. I’m a working Mom of 3 so I’m going to give some real talk and say I don’t have time to reheat on the stove top so I’m pretty much team microwave. I know some people will gasp, but it’s ok y’all. Place cubes in a bowl in the microwave and heat for 15-25 seconds. Stir, test and adjust time appropriately. Obviously, always check the baby food before serving and always stir it completely to make sure there are no hot pockets.
